Scaffolding the Academic Writing Process

August 6 @ 8:00 am - 8:45 am

Free

In the AI age, it is essential for teachers to break down writing assignments into stages that can be assessed individually, so that we have an opportunity to intervene early if we see students getting off track in any way.

This Open Society University Network Liberal Arts & Sciences online presentation will unpack the scaffolding necessary to guide students in producing high-quality writing in the humanities based on textual analysis, including:

  • Individual close reading and collaborative note-taking
  • In-class discussion techniques that require careful listening
  • Crafting both open-ended discussion questions and research questions
  • Draft work, from individual response journal through final paper
  • Productive, accountable peer review tools and practices
  • Prompted process writing for reflective self-assessment
  • Assessment rubrics and forward-looking faculty comments
